The Cave at Home: Building a Lethal Home Gym in a Small Space

My cave has a lifting platform, racks, and more weight plates than some commercial gyms keep in stock. But it wasn't always like this — and the truth is that 90% of the results come from 10% of the equipment. If I had to start over in a small apartment, this would be the arsenal.
The centerpiece: adjustable dumbbells
One pair going from 5 to 52 lbs (or more) replaces an entire wall of dumbbells. Presses, rows, Bulgarian split squats, overhead work, Romanian deadlifts — all with two objects that fit under the bed. It's the best return per square inch on the market. Prioritize models with a solid locking mechanism: a dumbbell that disassembles mid-air is a recipe for disaster.
The multiplier: an adjustable bench
Without a bench you lose half the angles. With one: flat and incline presses, supported rows, step-ups, split squats. Choose one rated for at least 550 lbs combined — stability isn't a luxury, it's a prerequisite.
The back builder: a doorway pull-up bar
No home equipment delivers more muscle per dollar. Pull-ups, chin-ups, negatives, knee raises for the core. Install it, test it carefully, and hang — that's how you build the V-taper.
The portable arsenal: resistance bands
Travel, deloads, warm-ups, burnout sets. They fit in any backpack pocket and keep the standard anywhere in the world. No geographic excuses.
The cave program (3x per week)
- Bulgarian split squat with dumbbells — 3x8 per leg
- Dumbbell bench press — 4x8
- Pull-ups — 4x max
- Standing dumbbell overhead press — 3x10
- Dumbbell Romanian deadlift — 3x10
- Plank — 3x45s
The verdict
Total investment: less than 6 months at a mediocre gym. The return: no line at the bench, no peak hours, no witnesses on your bad days. The exact equipment I'd choose is in the arsenal below. Build the cave. Show up every day. The rest is consequence.
